Charter
In the fall of 1945 a group of veterans applied for a Royal Canadain Legion Charter. The Branch was originally going to be call "Alexander Branch", but the name was rejected. On February 07, 1946 the name and charter were finalized.
Ladies Auxiliary
The ladies wanted to take a more active role in the Branch thus, a Ladies Auxiliary to the Kingsway Legion was formed on August 23, 1948. Eleven ladies signed the Charter. During 1946 a bid was made for the Auxiliary Services Hut on Kingsway. This bid was accepted and the Branch became a viable entity.
Membership began to increase and an addition was built with a volunteer contractor and volunteer labour by members. The building was completed and formally opened in 1951.
Expansion
Expansion was again necessary in 1959. The old "HUT" was badly deteriorated and the membership decided that a new building was in order.
WWII
During the second world war the propery that Kingsway now occupies was designated a "MEMORIAL PARK". After the training facilities were in place an odd shaped peice of property was left over, and this was becoming an eyesore. It was rehabilitated with the constructin of field stone Cairns to commemorate the units from this area who served in the war.
Kingsway Legion requested permission to build on this property. It was granted with the stipulation that Kingsway commemorate the Cairns and assume care of the park. The decisiion was to build a "MEMORIAL WALL" within the Branch to commemorate the Regiments as follows:
THE SOUTHERN REGIMENT
MIDLAND REGIMENT
ROYAL CANADIAN ARTILLERY
ROYAL CANADIAN ENGINEERS
THE LOYAL EDMONTON REGIMENT
THE EDMONTON FUSILIERS
Fire of 1982
In July of 1982 a disastrous fire struck the Branch destroying the interiour of the building. The President lead a committee for reconstruction. The committee worked night and day resulting in one section of the building opening on November 15, 1982.
On July 24, 1983 our present premises was ready for full occupancy and our official opening took place.
Through the dedication and hard work of our membership the mortgage was burned on October 21, 1984.
Cenotaph
Kingsway membership felt an outdoor monument should be built to maintain Kingsway Legion Lawns. The existing Cenotaph was offically dedicated on Sunday, September 15, 1985, keeping the original concept of the participating Regiments.
Community
Through all these adversities Kingsway #175 did not neglect it's responsibilities to the community. Over the years our dontations to charitable institutions amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. We are one of the major contributors to the Kidney Foundation. We also financially support a Seniours Organization called the Kingsway Legion Over Sixty Club.
